TECHNICAL GUIDE · PROCUREMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

What Information Should a Plant Prepare to Request a Quote for an Industrial Monitoring System?

Define what needs to be measured, how the information will be used and the conditions required to install and commission the solution.

KERN IoP architecture with machine, auxiliary equipment, SMARTPRO Hub, touchscreen interface and MONITOR platform.
Monitoring architecture with a machine, signals and data acquisition.

Start with the question that matters on the plant floor

A solution that measures only an injection-moulding machine’s main electrical supply and one that measures several auxiliaries separately provide different information. Likewise, energy metering is not equivalent to calculating full OEE, which requires planned production time, ideal cycle time and conforming quantities.

  • Which machines and auxiliary devices should be included?
  • Is the objective power and kWh, cycles and downtime, process variables, quality or a combination?
  • Who will use the data, and what decision should it support?
  • What is the minimum scope, and what might be added in a later phase?

Information to prepare for the technical enquiry

Procurement can gather this information with production, maintenance, process engineering and IT. Exact component references can be selected during the technical review rather than being specified in advance.

  • Inventory of machines, locations, brands, models and selected auxiliary equipment.
  • Number of electrical supplies and available electrical information; authorised personnel must confirm connections and safety conditions.
  • Known signals and protocols, subject to compatibility and access-permission checks.
  • Production orders, product references, times, cycles, quantities and quality information to be recorded or linked.
  • Network, access, installation space, authorisations and availability of plant personnel.

A comparable quotation separates equipment scope from dependencies

  • Included acquisition equipment, meters, sensors and interfaces.
  • Measurement points and the limits of the proposed scope.
  • Screens, forms, software, historical records and licences included in the configuration.
  • Installation, plant preparation and commissioning responsibilities.
  • Deliverables, verifiable tests and acceptance criteria.
  • Support, training, renewal and expansion options as specified in the current proposal.

The modular architecture allows a defined measurement application to be deployed and later extended, provided that the additional components and services are specified and quoted.

What should be checked before issuing a purchase order?

Scope: The included circuits and signals have been identified. Preparation: Each party understands its requirements for installation and access. Use: Plant personnel know which information will be recorded. Acceptance: Tests are agreed to confirm delivery.

Price alone cannot establish comparability between proposals with different coverage. Compare scope, services, continuing operation and associated costs for each alternative.

Questions worth resolving with the supplier

Can I request a quote without knowing every sensor part number?

Yes. Begin with the equipment and the operational requirement. Components can be selected once installation conditions have been checked.

Does an energy meter calculate OEE by itself?

No. Complete OEE requires valid availability, performance and quality records within a properly defined measurement scope.

Which documents can serve as project acceptance evidence?

The approved scope, inventory of measurement points, agreed tests and commissioning documentation can be established as proposal deliverables.
