PROCESS ENGINEERING

Determine what changed after a process adjustment.

Compare cycle time, energy consumption and quality results using documented material, mould and test conditions.

An adjustment may shorten a cycle and alter energy use, but may also coincide with changes in material, cooling or drying. Documenting the trial helps distinguish these effects and decide which operating condition to test again.

PROCESS ENGINEERING / CONTROLLED COMPARISON

An adjustment needs a comparable baseline.

To compare two injection-moulding conditions, document machine, mould, material, settings and observed cycles. Power measurements alone do not explain product quality or process stability.

CONDITION A

Reference process with documented parameters and cycles.

CONDITION B

Modified setting with documented material, mould and comparison criteria.

RESULT

Cycle time, energy and quality, where corresponding measurements are available.

01

Baseline conditions

Document machine, mould, material, active cavities and processing parameters. Select the result to compare: cycle time, energy, rejects or a part characteristic.

02

Comparable measurements

Where power measurement and cycle reference data are available, changes in the signal during moulding can be examined. The required synchronization and temporal resolution are assessed for each trial.

03

Results and follow-up

Check process stability and the number of cycles available for analysis. Document the selected condition and review its behaviour upon returning to routine production.

PROCESS ENGINEERING · FURTHER ANALYSIS

What should be recorded before modifying a process recipe?

A documented baseline helps interpret changes in cycle time, energy and physical signals without confusing a process adjustment with changes in material, mould or thermal conditions.

SMARTPRO displaying actual injection-moulding pressure readings and curves.

What makes a process signature useful?

Consecutive cycles under known conditions, timestamps, measured signals and manufacturing records. The number of observations needed depends on variability and the question being investigated.

A PLANT-FLOOR EXAMPLE

Before drawing conclusions.

Two process conditions produce conforming parts. To compare them, measure energy per cycle and cycle duration, keep equipment identification consistent and verify quality with appropriate tests. Lower energy consumption alone does not prove that parts meet specifications.

APPLICATION ASSESSMENT

Discuss a process trial

A process signature adds time-resolved signal behaviour to the analysis. Interpreting it requires machine knowledge and correlation with relevant events and variables. It does not replace product-quality measurements.
