Efficiency and Sustainability in Injection Molding: What to Measure

A technical perspective on using production, energy and process data to compare injection molding conditions and support improvement projects.

Improvement of Injection Molding Parameters

Consistent data collection makes it possible to compare a reference condition with a modified process using indicators such as cycle time, energy consumption, OEE components, scrap and downtime. The magnitude of any improvement depends on the initial condition, the machine, mold, material, operating practices and the change being evaluated. KERN IoP therefore treats savings, productivity gains and return on investment as project-specific results that must be established from a measured baseline and verified after the intervention.

Enhancing Sustainability with Industry 4.0

Sustainability is a critical concern for the plastics injection molding industry, especially with the emphasis on reducing environmental impact and promoting circular economy practices. Incorporating post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins into products presents challenges related to material consistency, quality control, and process optimization. Industry 4.0 tools are essential in addressing these challenges and facilitating the seamless integration of PCR resins into injection molding processes.

KERN IoP can integrate available machine signals, sensors and production records to document how the process behaves when PCR resins or other variable materials are used. Monitoring does not by itself control material properties or guarantee product quality; it provides evidence that engineers can relate to material, machine, mold and inspection results when defining and maintaining an appropriate process window.

When the project scope and available data justify it, historical analysis can be used to identify patterns and compare operating conditions. Any predictive or automated control function requires a specific model, validation data and an implementation designed for the application; it should not be assumed from monitoring data alone.
